Colouring Townsend for Maeve

A pair of Haldimand County neighbours are turning an art project into a fundraiser for a Townsend girl injured in a motor vehicle collision.Julie Crawford and Angie Bell, who live in Townsend, are planning an event to colour all of their community with chalk for five-year-old Maeve Field, who was struck by an out-of-control vehicle in Hagersville in March. The Colouring Townsend for Maeve event will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Townsend Lions Park on 58 Forest Park Dr. All donations will go to the Field family. A Go-Fund-Me account has already raised more than $136,000 for the family.Maeve’s recovery is expected to be a long one. Her left arm and right leg suffered irreparable damage from the accident and had to be amputated, her family said. The accident also left her blind in one eye.Crawford said she had to explain what happened to Maeve to her sons, who would see the girl when they got dropped off on the bus from school.“I was very honest with them about what happened with the accident, and they’ve been showing concern of what they can do,” she said. “They’ve been wanting to empty their piggy banks for her.”The idea for Saturday’s event came when Crawford’s sons wanted to colour the sidewalks. She suggested they do it for Maeve to send positive vibes her way. And Bell came up with the idea to get the whole community involved.“I know there were other fundraisers but I just really felt like the kids needed an outlet for them,” said Bell. “They need to know what a community is capable of doing.”Crawford and Bell said they have contacted a lot of people to help with the event, but an equal number of people have contacted them. The event will feature entertainment for children, including the chalk art, a bouncy castle, Ohsweken Speedway cars and OPP cruisers. There will be a silent auction featuring donations from The Urban Parisian Café, Cottage North Soapworks, Broncos, and many more businesses. The Townsend Lions will be running a barbecue, starting at noon, at the pavilion in the park.A craft table will be set up for anyone that would like to make a card for Maeve or her [email protected] read more
