Jamaica’s diaspora policy reflects committment to those overseas

first_imgKINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – Foreign Affairs Minister Kamina Johnson Smith, says the proposed implementation of a National Diaspora Policy reflects the commitment of the Government across administrations to the development and well-being of Jamaicans abroad. She said the policy, which is now at the draft stage, has gone through various consultations and reviews, including valuable inputs from the Jamaican Diaspora.“We had multilevel layers of consultation [including focus groups] and even then, there were deeper discussions with the Diaspora Advisory Board members… . This is part of a truly inclusive process, which has taken us to this draft National Diaspora Policy,” she said. She was speaking at a plenary session for the Eighth Biennial Jamaica Diaspora Conference here on Wednesday. The Foreign Affairs Minister said the policy is intended to provide the foundational institutional framework for engagement with the diaspora.“While we speak about diaspora engagement, diaspora policy, diaspora investment, et cetera… and while administratively it has been done to an extent, there is no institutional framework within the Jamaican policy framework,” she said.According to Johnson Smith the intention is to now embed the policy “to make sure it is there in a formal sense, which will lead to its sustainability”.“We need to have an institutional framework, which will allow us to develop greater understanding of and response to diaspora challenges, and we need to have a sustainable way to build greater affinity with the younger generation.”She noted that the policy will allow for a more cohesive approach to diaspora engagement.“We have to improve communication and coordination. So we need a mechanism that, while flexible, will give a single platform to allow all of the various branches to have something to connect to, and we need to enhance diaspora contribution to national development,” she said.During the session, Johnson Smith gave a presentation on the policy, seeking the endorsement of members of the diaspora before its presentation to Cabinet, then to Parliament.Eight major policy goals have been established for the National Diaspora Policy. These treat with diaspora engagement and facilitation of their partnership in national development, including through human capital inputs, promotion of the well-being of Jamaicans at home and abroad, and the engagement of young people. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade will have primary responsibilities for policy implementation and monitoring. In fulfilling these duties, the Ministry will work in collaboration with the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ), the National Working Group on International Migration and Development, and the Diaspora Advisory Board or its successor body.last_img read more

‘Peace can be threatened’ – Chelsea outgoing transfer could cause trouble…

first_imgAlvaro Morata to Sevilla is exciting for the Spanish sport media, and especially those who follow the club closely. The striker did well at Juventus, did well at Real Madrid and is currently under a cloud at Stamford Bridge.Sections of fans have turned against Morata and an exit is looking increasingly likely.Juanma Lopez, the player’s agent, this week visited Sevilla’s offices for talks and as far as the Spanish media are concerned, the player and club side is sorted out, all that’s left is for Chelsea to agree. However, there’s already insinuations it’s a deal which doesn’t make a great deal of sense, even on a loan basis.Marca run a headline on Wednesday saying ‘Three’s a crowd’, and explain Sevilla are doing relatively well just as it is upfront.Statistics would back that up to an extent. Sevilla are the second highest scorers in La Liga so far this season, but to counter that they’ve only scored more once in one of their last six league matches.Embed from Getty ImagesAndre Silva has eight goals from 17 games in the competition, and Ben Yedder has nine goals and five assists. In December, Silva told Marca: “He (Yedder) understands me well and when I hold the ball up, it goes to him. We look at each other a lot. We are very good and we hope to continue like this.”Sevilla are described as ‘determined’ to pay the €39m which would make Silva’s loan move from AC Milan permanent, and Marca say there’s also a meeting planned to improve Yedder’s contract and up his €30m release.Putting Morata into this equation is possibly going to leave someone unhappy. The player would only arrive from Chelsea with the intention to play, and whilst the Spanish newspaper feels it can be balanced due to the number of games, there’s a question of who would start for the really important matches.Marca end their article as they started it: ‘The Sevillista peace can be threatened. Tour of Britain cancelled due to virus

first_imgDutchman Mathieu Van Der Poel won the Tour of Britain last year, but the Alpecin-Fenix rider will have to wait until 2021 to defend the title. The event was set to start in Penzance on September 6 before finishing in Aberdeen a week later.“The decision has been taken in light of the ongoing situation with the COVID-19 pandemic, which makes continuing with the planning and organisation of the 2020 race impractical,” Tour organisers said in a statement on Thursday.“Across the UK there are significant doubts around the potential to stage large-scale public events and gatherings such as the Tour of Britain as early as September and while any form of social distancing remains in place and there isn’t a vaccine available, people’s health and safety must come first.”There was little appetite to stage the race without fans present, either from organisers or local authorities who bid for stages in expectation of boosting the local economy.“Holding the Tour of Britain behind closed doors or with extensive social distancing rules would not only be immensely impractical, but would rob our venues and spectators of these opportunities and go against everything that cycling, as a free-to-spectate and accessible event, stands for,” the statement said.last_img read more
