High school girls golf: Timpview takes first-day lead over favorite Corner Canyon in 5A girls golf

first_imgWEST VALLEY CITY — Corner Canyon, which has won three straight girls’ golf tournaments, including a convincing 37-stroke victory at last year’s 5A tournament, came into this year’s meet as the favorite as the Region 7 champion.However, after a wild-weather day at the Ridge Golf Course Tuesday, the Chargers find themselves looking up at leader Timpview, which takes a one-stroke lead into Wednesday’s final round.The T-Birds, who finished second behind Corner Canyon in Region 7, fired a 328 total, led by three freshmen golfers, Keilani Hanamaikai, Sunbin Seo and Rachel Lillywhite, who had scores of 79, 80 and 82.“I’m happy,” said fourth-year T-Bird coach Jeff Ward. “We exceeded our goal today.”His six golfers, as well as the other 106 golfers in the tournament, had to endure some fierce wind and rain that delayed play twice for more than three hours total as the last group of the day didn’t finish their round until just before 8 p.m.As Alta golfer Whitney Dana put it, “This was the longest day of golf ever. Then shortly after noon when the rain started coming down sideways, play was stopped again for a couple of hours.“They didn’t complain,” Ward said. “We planned for it — it was start, stop, start, stop. It was a test of endurance.”West junior Whitney Banz had the top individual score of the day with a 1-over-par 73 as she helped the Panthers to make their first cut ever. Three golfers are four strokes back at 77, Brighton’s Brooke Kahl, Corner Canyon’s Jamie Connell and Bountiful’s Vanna Einerson.Alta, a perennial contender, stands third at 345, followed by Brighton at 351, Skyline at 362 and West at 365.Besides Connell’s 77, Corner Canyon counted scores of 79 by Savannah Romney, 84 by Suzie Taylor and 89 by Ellie Whitehead in the best four-of-six scoring.
