A Virgin ATR. Photo: Bahnfrend/Wikimedia Commons Australian air safety investigators are looking into a rare double flame-out on a twin-engine commuter plane descending into the nation’s capital. Both engines on a Virgin ATR-72-600 turboprop, registration VH-FVN, experienced problems near Canberra Airport on December 13.Although the disruptions were momentary and the aircraft landed safely, the probability of both engines shutting down during a flight is low and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) is treating the incident as serious.Turboprops use gas turbine engines to power the propeller and a flameout occurs when the flame in the combustion chamber is extinguished. A flameout is believed to occur once in every 100,000 non-military flights, according to Air & Space Magazine.“While the aircraft was descending through 11,000 ft in heavy rain, the right engine’s power rolled back (decreased) and the engine flamed out,’’ The ATSB said. “The engine automatically re-started within five seconds.READ: Jetstar faces $A1.95 million fine for misleading customers.“The descent continued and, while passing through 10,000 ft, the left engine’s power also rolled back and that engine flamed out before automatically relighting.“The crew selected manual engine ignition for the remainder of the flight and the landing.”Although engines are designed to cope with extremely heavy rain, experts say it is normal to switch to continuous ignition as a precaution when heading into storms. This allows an engine to quickly relight in the case of a flameout, as was the case with the Virgin ATR.The aircraft spent three days on the ground before being returned to service. Virgin said the incident had not impacted customers and it was assisting the ATSB with its inquiries. The ATSB has downloaded the flight data recorder and is gathering additional information that will be included in a final report.“Should a critical safety issue be identified during the course of the investigation, the ATSB will immediately notify relevant parties so appropriate action can be taken,’’ it said. There have been a number of instances of jet engines flaming out in bad weather, not all of them with the happy ending in Canberra. In 1977, a Southern Airways DC-9 was forced to land on a highway in the US state of Georgia after suffering hail damage in a thunderstorm and losing thrust in both engines. Sixty-three people died.In 1988, A Salvadoran Boeing 737 operated by TACA flew through thunderstorms around New Orleans when both engines quit. The crew managed to relight them but they would not accelerate from idle speed and dangerously rising tailpipe temperatures forced the pilots to shut them down again. The captain dead-sticked the aircraft into a levee embankment and ditched the plane without loss of life.In 2002, a Garuda Indonesia Boeing 737 flight encountered severe thunderstorm activity on approach to Yogyakarta and suffered a flameout in both engines. The pilots tried several times to restart the engines but were forced to ditch in a shallow river with the loss of one life.

It is with regret that we advise that the Touch Football Australia (TFA) Annual General Meeting scheduled for the 10 November 2007, has been postponed until further notice.Due to the requirements of the Australian Capital Territory Incorporations Act, TFA will be unable to continue with the meeting. There has been a dramatic change in the scope of the organisation and it is imperative that under the direction of the new Chief Executive Officer and Board of Management that all matters are checked with due diligence. Whilst it is unfortunate that this issue has delayed the process, it is also important that the reports are accurate. About the authorFreddie TaylorShare the loveHave your say Man Utd boss Solskjaer: It’s on Alexis & Lukaku to win starting spotby Freddie Taylor10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveManchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez must take it upon themselves to break into his starting line-up.Both players have struggled this season, with just ten goals between them in all competitions.Another United star, Paul Pogba, has returned to form under Solskjaer in his first two matches in charge. But the Norwegian says the improvement of his players is down to their own desire.”I cannot do anything for their performances on the pitch. Paul has done it himself. The players have done the performances,” Solskjaer said ahead of United’s match against Bournemouth.”I’m here to help them, guide them on the path, and then it’s up to them to do it on the pitch.”I don’t agree I’ve done that with Paul, and I can do that with Romelu and Alexis. It’s up to them when they get a chance. That’s the name of the game when you’re a footballer. You’ve got to do it yourself.”Yes you want help from your manager and your team-mates. I give them some guidelines. There’s been loads of talk about freedom of expression, but that’s how I’ve always been as a manager.”You can’t tell all the players what to do. They are here for a reason – they are good players. It’s up to them to use their imagination, creativity and enjoy playing for this club, because that is the best time of your life. It’s not a bad time being a manager either, for a little while.”
zoomImage Courtesy: Pacific Basin Hong Kong-based dry bulk shipping company Pacific Basin Shipping Limited is to expand its fleet with a further three secondhand Supramax vessels. As informed, the company recently committed to buying for cash three ships from undisclosed shipowners. The trio is scheduled for delivery over the next three months, Pacific Basin said in Q1 2019 trading update.During the first quarter of 2018, the shipping company also took delivery of two secondhand vessels – one Handysize and one Supramax. What is more, Pacific Basin accepted delivery of a Supramax bought in late 2018 and completed the sale of an older, small Handysize bulker. These acquisitions will increase the company’s owned fleet to 115 units by July. Including chartered ships, Pacific Basin operated an average of 220 ships overall during the first quarter of this year. From January to March this year, the company generated average Handysize and Supramax daily time-charter equivalent (TCE) earnings of USD 9,080 and USD 10,400 per day net, representing a 3% and 8% reduction compared to the same period in 2018.As of April 9, Pacific Basin has secured 36% of its 29,410 contracted Handysize revenue days at around USD 9,360 per day net and 58% of its 14,020 contracted Supramax revenue days at around USD 10,690 per day net for the remaining three quarters of 2019.As explained, the dry bulk freight market in 2019 has started weaker than the last two years due to trade war uncertainty and Chinese import policies. This led to weak spot market rates in the first quarter overall. However, the company’s Handysize and Supramax markets improved significantly during the second half of the quarter with marked increases of 58% in the Baltic Handysize Index (BHSI) and 38% in the Baltic Supramax Index (BSI).In contrast, the larger Capesize vessel segment has seen little recovery and continued to weaken throughout the first quarter.Referring to the outlook for 2019 which has been revised downwards due to the softening market, Pacific Basin said that a resolution to the trade conflict between the US and China would provide “a welcome boost to the market”.The company added that IMO 2020 sulphur preparations should lead to increased supply disruptions in H2, which could compound dry bulk market strength that typically builds in Q3 and Q4.“Despite short term volatility and in view of the combination of continued healthy growth in minor bulk demand and reducing Handysize and Supramax fleet growth, we continue to believe that the longer term fundamentals for our vessel segments are positive,” Pacific Basin concluded.
Ohio State redshirt junior forward Keita Bates-Diop (33) dunks in the second half in the game against Michigan State on Jan. 7 in Value City Arena. Ohio State won 80-64. Credit: Jack Westerheide | Photo EditorJust as he has all season, redshirt junior forward Keita Bates-Diop put the team on his shoulders in Ohio State’s 80-64 upset victory against No. 1 Michigan State. He finished the game with a career-high 32 points, seven rebounds and three steals in 35 minutes played. That type of performance from Bates-Diop has become the norm this season. He has scored double-digit points in all but one game and has recorded seven double-doubles. And against his team’s toughest opponent of the season, he excelled once again, proving his early season success was not the product of weaker opponents. “We gave him a couple that were just wide open, we were over helping on people,” Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo said. “But I was impressed. I thought he did a great job.”Ohio State head coach Chris Holtmann has emphasized throughout the year how important Bates-Diop will be to the success of the team. He and senior forward Jae’Sean Tate were two of the returning players with lofty preseason expectations. And both done everything asked of them. Bates-Diop leads the Big Ten with an average of 20 points per game, ahead of Minnesota junior forward Jordan Murphy by 1.1 points. He is also third in the conference in rebounds per game with 8.8, with Murphy’s 12.7 leading the way. In addition, he is tied for 12th in steals (1.2 per game), seventh in blocked shots (1.6 per game), second in defensive rebounding (7.5 per game), 14th in 3-pointers made (1.9 per game) and eighth in free-throw percentage (82.1 percent). The native of Normal, Illinois, has been anything but normal this season for the Buckeyes, and it has Holtmann aware that his star player could be headed to the NBA after the end of this season. Holtmann said Bates-Diop and his family had talked about the prospect of his moving onto the NBA earlier in the year, and decided it was a topic to be explored at a later time. “I think we’ve been having those thoughts for a little while,” Holtmann said Sunday. “You get in this business for kids to reach their dreams. You really do. So if that happens and he’s got an opportunity like that, I’m going to be so happy for him and his family.”The health of Bates-Diop has allowed him to have this season. Last year, He dealt with a stress fracture in his left leg that ended his season after nine games and ultimately caused him to take a medical redshirt.Izzo said he’s always seen the potential in Bates-Diop, having recruited the 6-foot-7 forward before he decided to go to Ohio State. He said even though Bates-Diop made some improvements during the past year, reaching this level was “two-thirds” getting back to full health. While the injury slowed his development, Bates-Diop said it gave him time to study different aspects of his game and prepare for this campaign.“Just sitting back and learning the game, re-watching old film, watching us play last season and learning what to do and what not do, and then the new coaching staff came in made us feel very comfortable,” Bates-Diop said. Finally fully healthy, Bates-Diop is having a breakout campaign, and it could lead to some hardware at the end of the year and a chance to take his talents to the next level. But as Holtmann and Bates-Diop have said, there is still plenty of season left to play, and he will need to maintain this production throughout the rest of the campaign if he hopes to receive the end-of-the-year recognitions.“There’s so much left to be played. There’s a lot left for us to prove. He’s just got to be Keita and whatever comes out of that, comes out of that,” Holtmann said. “But certainly [the NBA’s] a more and more real possibility. And if that were to happen, we’d be really happy. But we’ve got so much left to kind of learn when it comes to that situation.”
